I miss this view.

First (bird-watching) day of 2016
I drove to Steveston with my mother today for an afternoon walk. We stopped at a couple of places to do some bird-watching.

Holiday season update #2 from Peterborough
Hope everyone had a spectacular Christmas day. This is another photographic update from the past few days. I was busy cooking a turkey (for the first time) yesterday so I didn't get any chance to sort through yesterday's photos.
December 22nd (Sunday) - I shoveled snow in the driveway and was exhausted in the end to walk to school just for using internet. I took the dog out for few short walks and that was about it.

Mud Lake, Ottawa
Last night, my landlord hosted a Christmas party at her/my place, so I didn't go out until this afternoon. I searched online to see where popular bird-watching spots are and decided to go out to where I went almost two years ago (and saw waxwings). The spot is called Mud Lake, near the Britannia Yacht Club.

Being a tourist in Ottawa
One thing I enjoy about being in Ottawa is that there are so many interesting things to see and photograph. I bused to downtown today to get next month's bus pass and then I wandered around and took photos.

Hasta la vista, Peterborough
This weekend will be my last official weekend here in Peterborough. This time next week, I will be trying to get settled in Ottawa. This past two and half years in Peterborough have definitely brought me memorable experiences - mostly good but also some sad memories. I have traveled enough and met enough people since my undergraduate years to know that partings are eventual and inevitable, whether they are family, friends, or just acquaintances; therefore, the best thing to do is to look forward to the future and treasure the past (as I have tried to do with this blog).
Yesterday, I hanged out with friends for one last field outing and (potluck) dinner together.

Haven't photographed sunset in a while.

Trip to Ottawa
I just returned from a five-day trip in Ottawa where I looked for a place to move into next week, visited the professor whom I will be working for, and took care of some administrative stuff for my admission to the University of Ottawa.
I arrived on Friday evening and I spent the entire Saturday looking at (three) different places and decided on one later that day. Then I headed over to the chosen place on Sunday morning to hand in a deposit for the place. Afterwards, I bused to downtown to take a break and took some photos.

National Gallery of Canada. As you can probably tell, the weather was kind of crappy that day. Definitely visiting this place at least a few times for the next few years.

(Long) walks around Peterborough and Trent
I have been very busy lately because I am working on my funding applications for my potential Ph.D. position due next week. I took a little break on Thursday morning when I had to drive the lab vehicle to get serviced. After dropping the truck off, I walked to Jackson Park to photograph the fall colours.
The colours were mostly here, although there were still some green leaves.

Arctic/alpine pollination workshop in Kluane National Park, Yukon - Part 2
During the workshop we had various presentations from researchers currently working in the Canadian Pollinator Initiative (CANPOLIN) and members from the Yukon government and local First Nations group. We also discussed tasks that need to be done as the NSERC funded initiative is coming to an end, and also brainstormed topics/projects that will be of relevance to people living in northern communities and scientists in the future.
Thank you to the AINA for hosting us.

Second outing of 2013 - Boundary Bay revisited - Attempt 2
The past few days my mother and I have been paying close attention to the weather forecast and hoping for good weather so that we could go out to Boundary Bay again to look for Snowy Owls (since last time was unsuccessful).
Despite the 90% POP, the rain still did not show up in the morning, so my parents and I decided to take the chance and go out to Boundary Bay again right after lunch. The rain did not come at all this afternoon and we even saw a bit of sunshine, so that was pretty much a success in itself. The lighting wasn't that great today, so I had to set most of my minimal ISO to 800 for the birding shots, hence the "noisy" photos.

Lots of Northern Harriers flying around today.

Rare sunny break = bike to south dyke
The sun made a brief appearance this afternoon, and I used this opportunity to go out and exercise for a bit by biking to the dyke.
Sun was getting to set as I arrived (just after 3 pm).

Collection of assorted photos in November
November had been extremely slow, photography and blogging-wise due to the combination of poor weather, thesis writing, and uninteresting things to blog about.
Here are some photos taken in the second half of November.

Found a bird nest on the ground on the 14th when the weather was nice and I walked from where I live to school (takes about 1 hour).

Sunday Collage
Some photos taken on the drumlin this afternoon before I went to my office and did work. Nothing overly exciting. Saw a Pileated Woodpecker but missed the opportunity of taking its photo.

Back to Ontario
Photo taken on the shuttle bus going from Pearson airport to Peterborough. First Ontario sunset of the summer.. so far this year.

Driving around Richmond
After dropping my father off at work, my mother and I went to Iona Beach to do some bird-watching. Besides the swallows flying back and forth over the pond, it was a pretty quiet day, bird-wise.
A couple of Mallards on the water, including this female duck and her six ducklings.

After-dinner stroll around home
While my mother was preparing dinner, she found two snails in the yam leaves. She passed them on to me to take some photos before releasing them.

AAA trip to Amherst Island, Ontario
Trent's Avian Appreciation Association (AAA) has been planning a birding trip to Amherst Island for quite a while now, and I was glad to take a break from sorting my insect collection and go outside for a much needed birding experience. Amherst Island is an island in Lake Ontario and accessible by ferry (or air) and is home to many species of owls during summer and winter.
Leaving Peterborough around 8am.

Snowy but sunny Saturday in Ptbo
The internet connection in my residence is so crappy lately that I decided to come to my office (in school) on a Saturday to do some work. Plus, the weather is too nice to be inside all day.
It's pretty much a wintery wonderland here in Peterborough. This is exactly what winter should be in Canada!
