I have not been photographing or blogging as much as before, but hopefully I can resume once I am less busy. Yesterday morning I went out for a walk to the Fletcher Wildlife Garden hoping to photograph some wildlife. But it was too snowy, and not many creatures were out and about. I saw one cute <span style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_red_squirrel">American red squirrel</a> (<i>Tamiasciurus hudsonicus</i>) crouching on top of a branch looking a bit cold.</span><br />

Afterwards, I went to a local coffee shop called <a href="https://felinecafeottawa.com/">Feline Café</a>. I really enjoyed using E-620 and the associated lenses, and hopefully the company receiving it will find it a good home.<br />
<br />
I have been using my new lens for a while now, and it is versatile, sharp, and quick. For example, I can shoot landscape and portrait with this lens.<br />

The most current one (from June 30 to October 15) is <a href="http://english.mosaicanada.ca/exhibit">MosaïCanada150</a>, which consists of artistic displays made out of flower beds (a.k.a. mosaiculture). I went there twice, and each time there were many visitors which made photographing the displays very challenging. Here are some of the photos without many people in them.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

I booked a tour trip to Mont-Tremblant today, and although some of the views were spectacular, the fall colours were not at peak yet.<br />
<br />
We first visited Gatineau Park and then took a boat ride on Lac des Sables in Saint-Agathe. Lac des Sables is probably most well-known for the expensive houses owned by rich people along its shoreline.<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
A castle on sale for four million dollars!<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
After lunch, we went to Mont-Tremblant village and rode the panoramic gondola to the summit. Mont-Tremblant reminded us of Whistler with all the tourists and brand name stores.</div>

It is approaching those days when some of the leaves are just starting to turn their color but are still on the trees, and you just want to be outside and bask in the warmth from the sunlight. I walked to the Ornamental Gardens and Fletcher Wildlife Garden (FWG) yesterday to take some photos.<br />

I can't believe there are only four more months of 2017 left! Time to focus more on the present and worry less about the future. Aside from going to presentations, eating, and sleeping, there was not much time to explore this interesting city.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/psyl/36181678980/in/dateposted-public/" nbsp="" title="Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii)"><img alt="Cooper's Hawk (Accipiter cooperii)" height="532" src="https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4389/36181678980_c87f40ebbc_c.jpg" width="800" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
For example, we woke up very early one day and went for a stroll around a park (<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Laurelhurst_Park">Laurelhurst Park</a>) in the neighbourhood, where we came across two young Cooper's Hawks (<i><a href="https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Coopers_Hawk/id">Accipiter cooperii</a></i>).<br />
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
We took one morning off and visited <a href="http://www.powells.com/locations/powells-city-of-books">Powell’s City of Books</a>, the largest used/new bookstore in the world and a must-visit place for book lovers. I used the opportunity to search for this beautiful and informative book ("<a href="http://press.princeton.edu/titles/10593.html">The Bees in Your Backyard: A Guide to North America's Bees</a>"). Unfortunately, the only book in the store was slightly damaged so I received a 10% coupon and bought the book from another location later that day. While we were in downtown, we made our way to <a href="http://explorewashingtonpark.org/">Washington Park</a>, where we checked out the Rose Garden and Japanese Garden, which were packed with tourists (like us).</div>

The highlight of the workshop happened after the workshop ended and we saw a female <span style="text-align: center;">Pileated Woodpecker (<a href="https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Pileated_Woodpecker/id"><i>Hylatomus pileatus</i></a>) pecking on a tree.</span><br />
<br />

<div style="text-align: left;">
In the evening, we walked towards LeBreton Flats to watch the finale of <a href="http://www.lamachine.fr/en/">La Machine</a>. For those of you not in Ottawa, La Machine is a street theatre using giant robots (Long Ma - a half-horse, half-dragon; and Kumo - a giant spider) and it has <a href="http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/ottawa/la-machine-grand-finale-lebreton-flats-1.4228572">attracted more than 750,000 visitors over the past four days</a>. There is a backstory to the whole performance, which you can read about it <a href="http://www.ottawa2017.ca/events/signature-events/la-machine/">here</a>.</div>
<br />

We were amazed by the incredible details and all the moveable body parts on Long Ma.<br />

Long Ma getting his sacred temple back. <span style="text-align: left;">La Machine was definitely the most unique event that I have experienced here in Ottawa!</span><br />

Next Sunday, my girlfriend and I are flying to Portland to present our researches at ESA. Can't wait!</div>

Here are some of the insects and plants we have observed this month.<br />
<br />
Because of all the insect photographs I am taking, I bought a small flash this month and started incorporating a diffuser and reflector into my macrophotography based on the <a href="http://mirrorlessmacro.blogspot.ca/2015/04/macro-diffusion-for-mirrorless-camera.html">tutorial from this blogger</a>.<br />

This was my first time volunteering for this festival, but the weather had been quite uncooperative for me to attend all the shows and properly enjoy the music. The two main musicians why I volunteered for this festival were: <a href="http://www.hannahgeorgas.com/">Hannah Georgas</a> and <a href="http://www.listentofeist.com/">Feist</a>, and I didn't miss them regardless of how bad the weather was.<br />

To maintain a good work-life balance (especially when the weather is nice out), my labmates and I are helping setting up a group that focuses on enhancing our understanding about urban pollination on campus - by planting native plants and recording plant-pollinator interactions. Yesterday, we walked around the campus and I photographed some of the floral visitors that we observed.<br />

They are leaving tomorrow, but I think they had a good time overall. Here are some of the pictures from the tulip festival.<br />

When we arrived at the park, the weather was not optimal to perform hand-pollination, so we grabbed coffee from the nearby <a href="http://www.en.cafechatsiberien.com/">Siberian Cat Café</a>, where I took photos of these gorgeous cats.<br />

On my way home, I walked through the Fletcher Wildlife Garden and Arboretum to enjoy the beautiful spring weather. I saw many birds yesterday but I did not bring a binocular or a camera to identify the birds properly. Today, I brought my camera and it was definitely more satisfying when I can identify the birds.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/psyl/33521523143/in/dateposted-public/" nbsp="" title="Blue-headed Vireo (Vireo solitarius)"><img alt="Blue-headed Vireo (Vireo solitarius)" height="450" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2806/33521523143_53f9fd5bdb_c.jpg" width="800" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Yesterday, my girlfriend and I saw many skinny small birds fluttering from branch to branch that we could not identify. Today, with my camera, I realized they were probably Blue-headed Vireos (<i><a href="https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Blue-headed_Vireo/id">Vireo solitarius</a></i>) which I have not seen before!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a name='more'></a><br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Another look at this beautiful vireo with its wide white spectacles.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The vireo flew to a hawthorn tree where a Song Sparrow (<i><a href="https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Song_sparrow/id">Melospiza melodia</a></i>) caught my attention.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
On the same tree was a Ruby-crowned Kinglet (<i><a href="https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Ruby-crowned_Kinglet/id">Regulus calendula</a></i>). I believe this kinglet may have been building a nest in the tree because two blackbirds appraoched the tree and forced the kinglet to temporarily move to another tree.</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

Most of the park are snow-free, but everything seems to be emerging later than in Ottawa. We didn't count many flowers but we did see some interesting wildlife.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

She spotted some Bohemian Waxwings (<i><a href="https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Bohemian_Waxwing/id">Bombycilla garrulus</a></i>), and one of them was trying to eat this crab apple that was too big for its mouth. The bird smashed the fruit against the tree and ate the smaller piece.</div>

Everything is going well, but I just haven't really had the time to be outside for extended periods of time (especially during the miserable winter weather) and photographing things. Hopefully with the start of spring (yay!), I can start spending more time outside again. <br />
<br />
Spring has begun in Ottawa, and the other day, I saw from <a href="http://ebird.org/ebird/canada/subnational2/CA-ON-OT?yr=cur&m=1">ebird</a> that a <span style="text-align: center;">Harlequin Duck had been sighted along the Rideau River. The weather was quite nice today, so this afternoon, my girlfriend and I walked over to Strathcona Park and did a little bit of bird-watching. Along the way, we ran into a friend who mentioned that the water level was quite high and a </span><span style="text-align: center;">Snapping Turtle was spotted feeding under a flooded swing set right next to the river recently. </span><br />
<span style="text-align: center;"><br /></span>
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Once we arrived at the park, we immediately saw a <span style="text-align: center;">Harlequin Duck (</span><i style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Harlequin_Duck/id">Histrionicus histrionicus</a> - </i><span style="text-align: center;">a bird I haven't seen <a href="http://p-s-y-l.blogspot.ca/2011/01/dining-out-vancouver-visiting-ubc.html">in six years</a></span><span style="text-align: center;">) swimming with some Common Goldeneyes (</span><i style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Common_goldeneye/id">Bucephala clangula</a></i><span style="text-align: center;">).</span></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

I try to take some photos here and there, but I wish I have more to show.<br />
<br />
The most exciting part about the first two months is the opportunity to observe lab-reared <i>Bombus impatiens </i>emerging from their brood cells.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/psyl/33005256912/in/dateposted-public/" nbsp="" title="Bombus impatiens ready to emerge"><img alt="Bombus impatiens ready to emerge" height="450" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/4/3933/33005256912_a6cbe2b65c_c.jpg" width="800" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
First look at the world.<br />
<br />
<a name='more'></a></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Chewing its way out.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/psyl/33034137771/in/dateposted-public/" nbsp="" title="Emerging Bombus impatiens"><img alt="Emerging Bombus impatiens" height="600" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2845/33034137771_12bb79b882_c.jpg" width="800" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
Welcome to the world!<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
I also returned to the Museum of Nature to see the reptiles exhibit again.</div>
<div style="text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/psyl/32346406553/in/dateposted-public/" nbsp="" title="Veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus)"><img alt="Veiled chameleon (Chamaeleo calyptratus)" height="800" src="https://c1.staticflickr.com/3/2846/32346406553_6646868367_c.jpg" width="800" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
I finally got a decent photo of the Veiled chameleon (<i><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veiled_chameleon">Chamaeleo calyptratus</a></i>).<br />

<div style="text-align: center;">
I pretty much stayed indoors this past two months and only went out once to look at some of the Winterlude events.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Until next time.</div>

I trekked around the Arboretum and Fletcher Wildlife Garden (FWG) recording my first birds of 2017. <br />
<br />
By the way, I started a Facebook page called <a href="https://www.facebook.com/psyl.photography/">PSYL Photography</a> that will feature some of my photographs. If you visit Facebook more often than my blog, then perhaps that is a good place to subscribe to. Thanks.<br />
<br />
Now, onto today's sightings. There were many common birds around the Fletcher Wildlife Garden feeders, such as the chickadees, juncos, and more.<br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
I saw some White-breasted Nuthatches (<i><a href="https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/White-breasted_nuthatch/id">Sitta carolinensis</a></i>) wedging seeds into tree barks.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

As I was walking around the Arboretum hoping to see more unique bird species, I heard a very loud pecking sound - it was a Pileated Woodpecker (<i><a href="https://www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Pileated_woodpecker/id">Dryocopus pileatus</a></i>)!</div>

As 2016 comes to an end, it is time to focus on the positive things that had happened and look forward to the things that will arrive in the new year. <br />
<br />
Nothing really exciting (or positive) happened during the first half of 2016, where I was pretty much waiting and planning for my third and final field season. During my field season, I added several crucial components to my research and visited beautiful places such as <a href="http://p-s-y-l.blogspot.ca/2016/07/july-update-pikes-peak-july-9-10.html">Pikes Peak</a> and <a href="http://p-s-y-l.blogspot.ca/2016/07/july-update-conundrum-hot-springs-july.html">Conundrum Hot Springs</a> with my friend. After coming back to Canada, I packed and moved to my own place in Ottawa and went on trips to <a href="http://p-s-y-l.blogspot.ca/2016/08/touring-quebec-city-and-montreal.html">Quebec City/Montreal</a> and <a href="http://p-s-y-l.blogspot.ca/2016/09/touring-toronto-and-niagara-falls.html">Toronto/Niagara Falls</a> with my mother. I was mostly busy during the school semester but still enriched my life by going to the <a href="http://p-s-y-l.blogspot.ca/2016/10/butterfly-show-at-carleton-university.html">Butterfly Show</a>, <a href="http://p-s-y-l.blogspot.ca/2016/10/big-sky-ranch-sarsaparilla-trail_26.html">Big Sky Ranch</a>, and <a href="http://p-s-y-l.blogspot.ca/2016/12/museum-of-nature-reptiles-and-others.html">Museum of Nature exhibits</a>. <br />
<br />
In 2017, I will be attending a conference and defending my Ph.D dissertation (if everything goes to plan). Aside from those, my future will once again enter a sea of uncertainties. I will try to find jobs and think about what I want to do with my life. I have been thinking about selling my photographs - either to stock photography and/or as prints to anyone interested in them, which means I should enter social media to promote my photos (hence the new changes to this blog). We shall see if any of that come to fruition, but I will keep everyone posted if I do.<br />
<br />
In the meantime, here are some more photos of Clark the cat.</div>

My friend and I tried to do bird-watching (at Mud Lake) this morning, but it was too snowy and cold and we only saw a couple of chickadees, nuthatches, woodpeckers, and crows. Afterwards, we went to school to water some of my friend's plants. Since I brought my camera with me and didn't use it at all today, I took some photos of her <i>Coreopsis tinctoria</i>.</div>

<br />
Because of the sunny weather, I was able to increase the ISO to get faster shutter speeds and increase the depth of field, resulting in sharp images. The auto-focus was also speedy and accurate, which was the main reason why I got this new lens.<br />

<br />
The first animal that you will see in the exhibit is a fierce-looking <span style="text-align: center;"><a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alligator_snapping_turtle">Alligator snapping turtle</a> (</span><i style="text-align: center;">Macroclemys temmincki</i><span style="text-align: center;">). It is sad to see this large animal in a very small display area and is submerged in water all the time. </span><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/psyl/31687985506/in/photostream/" nbsp="" title="Alligator snapping turtle (Macroclemys temmincki)"><img alt="Alligator snapping turtle (Macroclemys temmincki)" height="1024" src="https://c3.staticflickr.com/1/584/31687985506_074dea93fb_b.jpg" width="609" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alligator_snapping_turtle">Alligator snapping turtle</a> (<i>Macroclemys temmincki</i>)</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
</div>
<a name='more'></a><br />
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/psyl/31578769102/in/photostream/" nbsp="" title="African spurred tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata)"><img alt="African spurred tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata)" height="598" src="https://c7.staticflickr.com/1/471/31578769102_7edbd1078f_c.jpg" width="800" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
The second animal is an <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/African_spurred_tortoise">African spurred tortoise</a> (<i>Centrochelys sulcata</i>). These animals reside in dry savannah and desert so the armoured legs help the tortoises build underground tunnels to stay cool and moist.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/psyl/31352396020/in/photostream/" nbsp="" title="African spurred tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata)"><img alt="African spurred tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata)" height="505" src="https://c5.staticflickr.com/1/739/31352396020_acb14a14cc_c.jpg" width="800" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
So cute.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
The first snake people will see in the exhibit is a <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaboon_viper">Gaboon Viper</a> (<i>Bitis gabonica</i>), which has the longest fangs (up to 5 cm) of any snake!</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">

<div style="text-align: center;">
Such a beautiful snake, but not really one I would want to encounter in the wild.</div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<br /></div>

<div style="text-align: center;">
One gecko was climbing on glass, and I was able to look at the fine hairs on the toes that allow it to cling onto glass.<br />
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
<a data-flickr-embed="true" href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/psyl86/31612945721/in/dateposted-public/" nbsp="" title="2016-12-15-PC150246"><img alt="2016-12-15-PC150246" height="535" src="https://c2.staticflickr.com/1/266/31612945721_bb3d5fae9e_c.jpg" width="800" /></a><script async="" charset="utf-8" src="//embedr.flickr.com/assets/client-code.js"></script></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
An <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tiliqua_scincoides">Australian blue-tongued skink</a> (<i>Tiliqua scincoides</i>). It briefly stuck its tongue out but I was too slow to photograph it.<br />
<br />
<div style="text-align: left;">
Now, one of the reasons why I went back to the exhibit two times was because I wanted to photograph the <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Veiled_chameleon">Veiled chameleon</a> (<i>Chamaeleo calyptratus</i>). It was completely hidden the first time and partly hidden the second time. Hopefully I will be able to see the whole creature next time. </div>
