February update

For some reason, 2017 is going by so fast that I am unable to slow it down and enjoy every moment of it.  I try to take some photos here and there, but I wish I have more to show.

The most exciting part about the first two months is the opportunity to observe lab-reared Bombus impatiens emerging from their brood cells.

Assorted photos in February

Here are some photos I took the past several days.

The Rideau Canal Skateway officially closed for the season yesterday and ended the shortest season on record (18 days).  Thankfully I got a chance to spend some time (walking) on the canal last Friday and to test my new lens.

Rideau Canal Skateway 2016

The Rideau Canal Skateway opened entirely on Friday for first time this winter.  Here are some of the photos I took on Wednesday and today.

It was snowing quite heavily on Wednesday afternoon.

Broken and slowly melting away

Life is a bit hectic at the moment.  Sometimes the only constant in my life is my love for nature, anything else will eventually fade away or break down.  Here are some photos taken during the past two weeks.

I bought a new camera lens during the holiday break - the M.Zuiko 14-42mm f3.5-5.6 II R.  It is a kit lens that usually comes with entry-level cameras, but now I can attach it to my camera without needing an adapter, which makes my camera less bulky and much lighter.

Return back to Ottawa & receiving my new camera - Olympus E-M1

I flew out of Vancouver on Monday night and arrived at Ottawa after midnight on Tuesday.

Rideau Canal in January & Alan the cat

Rideau Canal is perhaps the most convenient/interesting place for me to photograph because it is so close to the university.  Here are the photos I took along the canal this month.

March Update

Sorry for not posting anything in March until the very last day.  Life is just too hectic at the moment.  I sometimes still bring my camera with me and take photos whenever opportunities arise, but it's hard to dedicate time solely just to go out searching for wildlife and taking photos.  Plus, the freezing temperature dampens my enthusiasm when I stay outside for too long and start to lose feelings in my face and hands.  The weather is getting warmer now though, so hopefully I will get back out photographing again in April.

Here are some of the photos I took this month.

March 3rd - walked along the canal on a nice but cold day (I think).

Panning skaters on Rideau Canal

Here are some photos I took the week I flew back to BC (I just returned back to Ottawa early this morning at 3AM because of a 2-hour delay).  I tried to do some panning shots for the first time, but I am not very good at it.

Not a good shot at all, but I like the motion.

Only a part of the leg is focused.

Again, only the back foot is focused.

Definitely need more practice.

2014 Winterlude in Ottawa

Winterlude is a pretty well-known festival in Canada that celebrates winter.  The 36th annual event began this year on January 31 and will end on February 17.  I have been too busy to check it out extensively, but I took some time on Tuesday to check out some of the displays and ice sculptures, as well as this afternoon just to feel the atmosphere with so many people around.

Quick update about life

2014 is very slow-going at the moment.  I am currently taking a course in plant-animal interactions, assisting a laboratory course in cell biology, as well as figuring out what I will be doing this summer.  Also, my father had a car accident two weeks ago while returning home from work (in BC).  He is fine although the family car is totaled, so life is kind of difficult at the moment.  Between working at school, returning home every night, and buying grocery during the week, I haven't done as much in Ottawa as I would have liked.  Anyways, here are some photos of the Rideau Canal Skateway from last month and a few snowflake photos I took a few hours ago.  Back to work after this post.

Rideau Canal Skateway

Busy life and poor weather left me little time to go out photographing thus far.  The weather was kind of pleasant yesterday - warm and sunny, so I went for a walk along Rideau Canal during lunchtime, and people were back skating on the Rideau Canal Skateway once again after it being closed since the weekend due to the warm temperature.
