One of the first animals that we saw in the park once we arrived - a male Rock Ptarmigan (Lagopus muta) in winter plumage.

Last few days in Inuvik

I flew out of Inuvik this afternoon and am currently in Edmonton, where I will be spending a night before flying back to BC tomorrow afternoon.  The past few days in Inuvik had been more fulfilling than expected.

2012/7/17 (Tuesday)

After dropping off some field equipment at Parks Canada office, I was rushing back and forth between the transient housing and the cafe (with internet connection) to change all of my flights.  In the afternoon, I visited the Great Northern Arts Festival.

Update from Inuvik, NWT

Hi all, I am currently in Inuvik, NWT.  I left Ontario on the 15th and then left BC on the 22nd.  Nothing much was done while in BC - mostly just relaxing and enjoying family time with my parents.  My trip up north started on the 23rd from Edmonton to Inuvik, via Yellowknife and Norman Wells.  Here in Inuvik, we were suppose to fly out to Ivvavik National Park on the morning of 26th.  However, once we were in the air and near Sheep Creek, we found that it was covered by thick clouds and snow, and so we had to turn back to Inuvik.  We tried again on the 27th, but due to pilot unavailability (in the morning) and poor weather again (in the afternoon), we were grounded for one more day.

Today is the 28th and I really really hope that we can take off today and get my field season started.

Looking back at Inuvik Community Greenhouse

My family and I went out for meals the entire day, as well as getting some groceries and running errands, so here are some photos from July 23 when I visited Inuvik Community Greenhouse - definitely much greener compare to almost two months ago.

It's quite incredible to see the fruits and veggies and flowers that the local residents grow. The benefits of living in a place that receives 24 hours of daylight for a couple of months in the summer.

Roadtrip to Whitehorse and Dawson City

Our roadtrip began in the afternoon of July 27th.

Inspiration Point of Ivvavik National Park

Inspiration Point is one of the three popular hiking destinations around Sheep Creek campsite. It is a ridge that allows hikers to marvel the bends of Firth River and the mountains.

My first time going there was on June 1, a snowy day and made me feel like an explorer conquering a mountain while battling a blizzard.

One more post before leaving for fieldwork

Hi all, this will probably be my last post for the next ~70 days as I will be leaving for fieldwork tomorrow (Saturday) morning.

Left the office a bit early yesterday morning so that I can check out some wildlife along the way.

More from Inuvik, NWT

Went out for a walk yesterday morning before heading to Parks Canada office. The neighborhood we were placed in. Not exactly superb, but it's interesting (and safe).

From Edmonton to Yellowknife to Norman Wells to Inuvik

Arrived at Inuvik two days ago. The weather has been quite incredible so far - super sunny, cloudless sky, 24 hour daylight, and no mosquitoes yet. Here are photos from my journey from Edmonton to Inuvik.

Flying over some pretty incredible landscape, especially over places where you can't see any human destruction at all.
